Lars Stærk, John Andreas Savio, Ellisif Wessel
Lars Stærk (1902-1975) from Jurangohppi/Ropelv outside Kirkenes collected and wrote down Sámi tales he heard as a young man. The collection is unique and provides a good insight into life as it was long ago in the multicultural border area between Norway, Russia and Finland. The coastal Sámi and Skolt Sámi way of life and culture shape the stories, which are filled with both humour and love, as well as assaults and murders.
The tales are illustrated by two well-known artists from Kirkenes. Ellisif Wessel (1866-1949) was both a doctor`s wife and a socialist rebel, but also a highly regarded photographer. The Sami artist John Andreas Savio (1902-1938) became most famous for his woodcuts, which particularly highlight Sámi motifs. Many of these images fit well as illustrations for Lars Stærk`s tales and have therefore been given ample space to complement the stories in the book.
